More Classical in Nebraska

Some changes at KVNO and NET in Omaha and Lincoln are going to allow more Nebraskans to hear classical music.  From Dr. Michael Hilt, Associate Dean and Professor of Communication at the University of Nebraska at Omaha: Both KVNO and NET Radio are classical music stations … The KVNO service area (Omaha metropolitan area) will be expanded through the entire state from roughly 10 p.m. to 5 or 6 a.m. seven days a week.  NET Radio will have its Monday through Friday afternoon program (1-4 p.m.) on the air in Omaha.  I would say … Continue Reading

Dumping Classical Radio? Think Again.

There’s an interesting argument against classical music radio here today. Reacting to the reactions of Sacramento listeners at the loss of some classical programming, classical music blogger Greg Sandow writes about the reasons classical radio listeners shouldn’t be upset when stations cut back on or cut out classical music on their stations. And why do these stations cut back? Because people aren’t listening. Keep Your Eyes on WRR in Dallas

Thanks to Richard Schumacher for the heads-up that KHFM Albuquerque’s manager Sarah Colmark has been hired as General Manager at WRR in Dallas. Robert Wilonsky at the Dallas Observer has more information, including the contract and the press release from Maria Munoz-Blanco about Colmark’s hiring. Ms Colmark was station manager of Classical KHFM-FM (95.5 and 102.9 FM) in the Albuquerque / Santa Fe region. The station is owned by American General Media and, like WRR, operates as a heritage classical music station. Leading KHFM since 2008, Ms Colmark increased ratings by 50% and lowered the median age of the classical listener in the community by using an upbeat, positive and interactive broadcast style. During her tenure, KHFM completed several technology upgrades including conversion of the station’s … Continue Reading

Just What Sacramento Needs – More Talk, Less Music

The Sacramento Business Journal reports that Classical Public Radio in Sacramento is moving its jazz off of the dual format station KXJZ (JZ, get it?).  Why, you ask?  Here’s why: The changes will allow Capital Public Radio to repeat news and information shows that air during the day in the evening, and free up airtime to provide additional news and information programs. Repeats of talk shows??? They are moving jazz over to the classical music station 88.9 KXPR, displacing some of the classical programming.  But that’s ok, says General Manager Rick Eytcheson, because classical listeners can listen … Continue Reading
