Classical Expands In South Florida

Classical South Florida, owned and operated by American Public Media is acquiring WAYJ 88.7 FM in Fort Myers, Florida.

“We’re tremendously excited to have the opportunity to bring classical music back to the Southwest Florida airwaves,” said CSF president and general manager Douglas C. Evans. “Classical South Florida was launched in Southeast Florida in the fall of 2007, and its programming can now be heard from the upper Keys to the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast. Soon our programming will reach Southwest Florida as well, from Fort Myers to Naples and Marco Island.”

Current WAYJ programming will move up the dial to 89.5.

Adding classical in Fort Myers will give listeners in Florida the chance to hear APM shows such as Performance Today, SymphonyCast, Pipedreams, and the high quality announcing that characterizes APM’s day to day classical programming.

Bravo to APM for expanding the classical radio audience.

UPDATE: The price, according to the FCC, is $4.35 million (3.6 in cash, and the rest in a promissory note).
