Cape Cod Station in Bankruptcy

Classical WFCC on Cape Cod is part of a cluster of stations whose parent company, Sandab,  filed for Chapter 11 protection on Wednesday.   We’ll keep you posted. Mike has an inspiring post for Monday called Keeping Classical Radio Vital for the Future, by  Jack Allen, P.D. in Portland OR.  It’s another example of what I consider “serial encouragement” that should help counterbalance all the discouraging news. Drastic Cuts in Seattle

I was chatting with a reader this evening about how dire things are for orchestras and stations in this recession, when I got a call that Seattle’s commercial classical station KING-FM laid off most three of its on-air staff members today.  Steve Reeder, who’s been on-air for some 30 years was let go, as was Peter Newman, former Program Director and now overnight host.  Gigi Yellen, the evening announcer is out, as well.

The Continent’s Only Radio Orchestra Back in Business?

A year ago we reported on the demise of the CBC Radio Orchestra.  Now it looks as though the orchestra may have new life.  Time will tell, but the orchestra members have reunited with the help of  Montreal venture capitalist Philippe Labelle, and while they may not have their airtime restored (airtime is expensive real estate!) , they are at least collaborating with the CBC for a broadcast or two.  Instead, the old orchestra with a new name ( “National Broadcast Orchestra”) is going to be on YouTube and on its own website.
