KCME in Colorado Springs welcomes George Preston as its new General Manager. If you’ve been in the radio biz for a while, you know George as a presence on WFMT in Chicago and producer/host of the Chicago Lyric Opera broadcasts. Before that he was Music Director and overnight host at WNYC in New York. He is replacing Jeanna Wearing, who ran the station for 18 years and is staying on to help with development.
In Kansas City, defunct classical station KXTR is coming back as an internet station. Radio Bach is streaming classical music 24/7. Even though web listeners have lots of other online options, KC residents will be getting local arts news with their music. Johnson County Community College is the angel that is saving the format. Davidson College in NC has promoted longtime announcer and producer Frank Dominguez to General Manager of WDAV Classical Public Radio. Frank has been at WDAV for 20 years and is the host/producer of Concierto, a syndicated bilingual classical music program.
In Central Kentucky, radio pro Michael Carter has been forced to take retirement at WEKU/WKYL. Station owner Eastern Kentucky University has cut local hosting of classical music and eliminated Michael’s job. You can read about his outstanding career here.
Interlochen Public Radio turned 50 this summer. The station began as WIAA (Interlochen Arts Academy) as one of the charter members of the NPR family of stations. General Manager Thom Paulsen has been with the station for 37 years.
