Arts Reporter Colorado Public Radio is seeking an experienced Arts Reporter to join its Arts Bureau. The Arts Reporter covers all aspects of the CPR arts and culture community and produces content via the mediums of radio and the online arts hub (text, video, social media, still images etc). As a member of the CPR Arts Bureau, the Arts Reporter will work across all three of CPR’s programing services — News, Classical, and OpenAir.
As a key member of the editorial team, the Arts Reporter focuses on major stories around Colorado arts organizations, artists, and cultural concepts. Work includes producing in-depth feature stories, blog posts, social media feeds, and live events about culture-related events, trends, issues, and ideas. The goal will be to give people a deep understanding of the broad range of arts news, focused primarily on the Denver metro area and important and unique arts activities around the state (summer music festivals, innovative programs, etc.).
Major job responsibilities: the Arts Reporter researches, writes, reports, edits, and voices a wide variety of stories and series for the weekly arts show, morning and afternoon news magazines, and Colorado Matters. Works with the digital news team on re-purposing existing content for the online arts hub. Collaborates with the arts editor and news department on optimal placement of material, i.e. weekly arts show, news magazines, newscasts, and Colorado Matters. Provides regular short features on arts stories and on CPR’s two music services. Helps produce live forums on beat issues, and works as needed with regional partners and other resources to develop content in the subject area. Consults with arts contributors and cultivates sources broadly in the arts community for story ideas and contacts. Participates in all assigned fund-raising and outreach activities, on air and off.
Knowledge/Competencies: the Arts Reporter must have a thorough understanding of public radio news values and ethics and strong news judgment, a deep and broad experience in arts journalism, strong interpersonal skills with a team orientation and ability to work both independently and interdependently to achieve goals, understanding of the national and international arts landscape and the role that the arts play in people’s lives, good organizational skills, attention to detail, able to meet deadlines and work productively in a team environment, and excellent written and oral communications skills (including on-air).
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years working in journalism, including substantial arts experience; solid journalism credentials and impeccable ethical standards; the ability to tell stories and communicate information across a variety of media including radio, written word, video, photo, and social media; proven editorial skills, including writing and editing for broadcast and online; the ability to work accurately and gracefully under pressure. The Arts Reporter is a clear communicator who listens respectfully to others and can work effectively in a collaborative environment.
