We reported back in June 2011 about Nashville Public Radio taking over Vanderbilt University station WRVU and making it classical. They changed the call letters to WFCL and almost immediately began to operate the new format under an LMA. Now the former friends of WRVU are filing a petition to deny WFCL renewal of the license.
Radio Survivor has the story:
Supporters of the old college radio station WRVU have rallied under the non-profit organization WRVU Friends and Family and have been arguing against the sale since last year. Although the terrestrial signal is being utilized by Nashville Public Radio, students at Vanderbilt are continuing to operate the online-only radio station WRVU.org.
The petition highlights a number of complaints:
–That Vanderbilt didn’t consider the public interest when they made the sale (it was launched as a student teaching station).
–That the board lacked the authority to sell the license and to rent airtime to an outsider.
–The FCC ban on cash for airtime that was dealt with in San Francisco also applies in Nashville.
–That Vanderbilt has improperly relinquished control of the station.
Now we wait for the FCC to rule.
