General Manager Search – KCME in Colorado Springs

Our client seeks a General Manager for an all Classical public radio station in the Western United States, whose current GM is retiring, and who is likely to have an ongoing role at the station.

The ideal candidate will be energetic, entrepreneurial and externally focused, including being a highly effective advocate and spokesperson for the organization in the community. The GM will be the lead fundraiser for the organization, with commitment to and demonstrated success in relationship centered fundraising, including major donor and corporate (underwriting).

The Board of Directors believes Underwriting is a major opportunity for this organization, and is seeking someone who can help drive success in the area, including hiring and managing the staff and assisting in the cultivation and close process.

The organization has a proud heritage of serving its mid-sized city, located in a physically stunning geographical setting, and the station is a well-respected, listened to and valued institution.

We are conducting this search out of respect to the current General Manager, who will announce their retirement concurrently with the naming of the new General Manager.

The General Manager serves as the leader of the organization and as its public representative, reporting to the board of directors. The General Manager works in partnership with the board to ensure that the organization fulfills its mission and creates strategies that ensure the station’s future success.

Functions

Planning

  • Collaborates with the board to define and articulate the station’s vision and helps develop strategies for achieving that vision;
  • Creates annual operating plans that support strategic direction set by the board and submits annual plans to the board for approval;
  • Develops and monitors strategies for ensuring the long-term financial viability of the station;
  • Prepares an annual “state of the Station” report at the close of each fiscal year.

Management

  • Directs the operations of the station and assures compliance with legal and regulatory requirements;
  • Promotes a culture that reflects the organization’s values, that is conducive to office harmony and that encourages good performance and rewards productivity;
  • Develops future leadership within the staff;
  • Manages the human resources of the organization according to established personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations;
  • Ensures that staff has sufficient and up-to-date information in a manner that presents the “big picture” – pursuit of the organization’s mission;
  • Evaluates the staff’s performance on a regular basis.

Financial Stewardship

  • Develops annual budgets that support operating plans and submits such plans for board approval;
  • Prudently manages the station’s resources;
  • Ensures that all accounting procedures are in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
  • Provides prompt, thorough, and accurate financial information to the board of directors.

Community Relationships

  • Serves as the primary spokesperson and representative for the station;
  • Assures that the organization and its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented in a strong, positive image;
  • Builds relationships with peer organizations when appropriate.

Programming Effectiveness

  • Oversees the design, delivery and quality of programs and services;
  • Stays abreast of current trends related to the station’s services and andticipates future trends likely to have an impact on its mission;
  • Refines or changes programs in response to changing industry conditions.

Fundraising

  • Develops fundraising and revenue strategies and oversees their implementation;
  • Assures the timely submission of grant applications.

Board Support

  • Serves as an ex-officio member of the board of directors;
  • Supports the operation and administration of the board as requested;
  • Keeps the board informed, acts as a liaison between the board and staff.
