After Marty wrote last week about classical music and new media, we got a tip from Lawrence Budmen, a music critic who writes for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Lawrence alerted us to the fact that Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern time, WKCP in Miami will broadcast a live performance by the Cleveland Orchestra from Miami’s new Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. The concert will be streamed online at WKCP’s website, and Brian Newhouse, host of public radio’s SymphonyCast, will provide on-site commentary. “This definitely marks a major expansion for the station,” Lawrence tells us.
WKCP is owned by American Public Media Group, the parent company of American Public Media and Minnesota Public Radio. APMG is one of the most aggressively expansionist broadcasters in public radio. Though based in Minnesota, APMG also operates a station serving Los Angeles and recently attempted to move into Washington, D.C. WKCP marks the network’s latest expansion into a major market beyond its home base. Here’s more info on WKCP. And thanks to Lawrence for the tip!
