Last week Marty wished for a few more classical stations. Shortly thereafter I received an e-mail that in part answered her prayer. It announced the impending arrival of a new FM radio station that, although not devoted entirely to classical music, will certainly be unlike any other now on the air.
Public radio
Quote of the day
My favorite anecdote had to do with a friend who walked into an auto parts store and heard the show playing on the radio. She looked around and just saw these two geezers in Caterpillar caps behind the counter, and asked, “So do you like classical music?” They said, “That’s not classical music, that’s ‘From the Top.’ “
Classical MPR’s top programmer explains all those awards
Each year the Public Radio Program Directors Association hands out its Awards for Creative Excellence, recognizing stations for outstanding programming in public radio’s primary formats. Count on this: next year Classical Minnesota Public Radio will not be winning an ACE Award. That’s because MPR won its third consecutive ACE Award for classical programming this year, which disqualifies it from winning a fourth time.
Classical listeners testify to their love of music
People say they listen to classical music for the emotional connection — the feelings stirred by a beautiful performance. Perhaps more than any other fare on public radio, classical aims for the heart. This makes classical stations natural participants in a new public-awareness campaign for public broadcasting, “My Source.”
