KPBS in San Diego Drops Classical

KPBS is adding a classical music web stream to KPBS.org. Now classical music fans can access their favorite music 24-7 on KPBS.org instead of only during the evening hours on radio. While KPBS’ radio feed of classical is ending, the station will continue to frequently feature local classical music performances on Saturday and Sunday evenings. In addition, KPBS will continue to feature Classical-24 on our HD2 station. HD radio is becoming increasingly popular and more affordable. Many new car models feature HD radio.

From Radio_info.com: Entercom’s new “Fox” bumps classical KDFC To start the story: Entercom offloads San Francisco’s classical KDFC and will simulcast classic rock “K-Fox” on 102.1. Last week Entercom announced it’s paying $9 million for San Jose’s “K-Fox” KUFX (98.5). Today it says it’s dropping the longtime classical format on its own KDFC, San Francisco at 102.1 and simulcasting K-Fox there beginning January 24. The new home of classical? Catching Up On the News

Classical radio is not quite ready to bite the dust just yet! Two brand new 24-hour classical services in three markets are gearing up to go live this fall:

In Columbus, Ohio a new 24 hour classical station is about to start up.  Ohio State University’s WOSU is acquiring an adult alternative rock station and relaunching the frequency in the fall as Classical 101.  WOSU at 89.7, now dual format, will become an all news station carrying mostly NPR programs.  You can read about it here, on the WOSU website.
