Once Again, KUSC Gets It

I’ve always maintained that if a classical music radio station wants to be healthy, it needs to be Arts Central for its community.  That means the station should be the first place people turn for info.  For that reason, a good radio station will be the keeper of the community arts calendar.  It’s not rocket science and it’s not a hugely burdensome task, but it IS enormously useful to listeners if it’s done well. Need to find out what time a concert starts?  Where you can get tickets?   Who’s performing in what venue?  It’s a no-brainer.  Stations … Continue Reading

Radio France and BBC Radio 3 — Some Great Listening

Culture Monster of the LA Times reports that musicians from North Korea’s Unhasu Orchestra and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France performed jointly in the Salle Pleyel in Paris, under the baton of South Korean conductor Myung Whun Chung.  The concert was broadcast on Radio France and is available on-demand for the next month here.  It’s fun to hear the Korean traditional music. ********* From Mar. 23 through Mar. 31, BBC Radio 3 is going to play a Schubert marathon — all Schubert all the time.  The Independent has more, including an … Continue Reading

Classical Radio is Rosy in Connecticut

An absolutely wonderful post by Milton Moore about music in eastern Connecticut includes this tidbit: We even have more classical music on the radio now. In addition to the music programming on WNPR in Hartford, WSHU in Fairfield has spread its signal eastward, WMNR in Monroe has beefed up its broadcast area, and a commercial classical station, WCRI, popped up in Westerly. You can now channel-surf as you drive, something unheard of not long ago. It’s starting to feel like the best of times here. You can read the post on theday.com.  Mr. Moore expresses beautifully … Continue Reading

NPR Music on Your iPad

NPR Music has a new app for iPads that delivers a whole boatload of content very slickly.  I don’t have an iPad, so I’m just repeating the report by Christopher Breen at Macworld. The app contains a lot of archived material — audio, video, and text — and it also has radio.  NPR has underserved classical listeners for years now, but the new app brings oodles of classical radio back under the NPR wing, even if it’s not their own content. … the right side of the screen displays at least one featured station along with a list of … Continue Reading
