KUSC Bucks the Trend and Expands

LA’s sparkling classical radio station KUSC has been bucking trends for a while now, and I’m happy to report that they’ve bucked another one, to the benefit of central California.  While everyone else is cutting costs, KUSC has gone out on a limb and bought another station.  We reported back in October that KUSC would be expanding their signal.  Because of legal complications, that particular transaction fell through, but now the station has purchased KESC in Morro Bay for $1.2 million. Gleanings from a community radio conference

The National Federation of Community Broadcasters held its conference earlier this month in Portland. It’s now posted information from conference sessions online. For some presentations, recordings are available; for others, only handouts or slides are posted.

I’ve listened to a couple of sessions that might interest classical radio broadcasters. The keynote by Kim Klein, “War, Locusts, Famine and Your Community Radio Station: You Can Raise Money in Times of Crisis,” included good perspectives on fundraising.

WGBH Feeling the Squeeze

I don’t know if you’re following the brouhaha over the Boston Globe.  The paper’s owner, the New York Times, is threatening to close down the paper unless the Globe’s unions agree to $20 million in  concessions.  There’s plenty of upset in Boston over the news.
