Losing a Classical Station in Kansas City

KXTR, known as Radio Bach at 1660 AM in Kansas City is switching formats to an all talk business channel by next week.  The switch does not completely eliminate classical music on the radio in KC, because KPR plays 6-8 hours of classical a day on their dual format station.  But it does eliminate the majority of classical listening hours.  KXTR has enjoyed a large audience, at times registering a 4-share despite being on an AM frequency and not being very good at raising money. Chicago Listeners Lose on Classical Cruise

A story today in the Chicago Reader about a classical music cruise is enough to make you very sad.  Listeners of WFMT in Chicago were encouraged to sign up for a wonderful-sounding cruise: It was a classical music ocean cruise, a dreamy January escape to the Caribbean aboard a luxury vessel, with composer Roberto Sierra, rising conductor Eckart Preu, Grammy-winning chamber group the Parker Quartet, and a 50-piece orchestra providing the live soundtrack. Keep Your Eyes on WRR in Dallas

Thanks to Richard Schumacher for the heads-up that KHFM Albuquerque’s manager Sarah Colmark has been hired as General Manager at WRR in Dallas. Robert Wilonsky at the Dallas Observer has more information, including the contract and the press release from Maria Munoz-Blanco about Colmark’s hiring. Ms Colmark was station manager of Classical KHFM-FM (95.5 and 102.9 FM) in the Albuquerque / Santa Fe region. The station is owned by American General Media and, like WRR, operates as a heritage classical music station. Leading KHFM since 2008, Ms Colmark increased ratings by 50% and lowered the median age of the classical listener in the community by using an upbeat, positive and interactive broadcast style.
