New hires in Louisville and Toledo, plus a new jazz show

A few notices of new hirings and assignments worth pointing out today:

WUOL-FM, the classical station in Louisville, Ky., has a new general manager. Daniel Gilliam is described as a “musician, composer and radio host” by the city’s Business First. He replaces Alan Brandt, now a senior staff announcer.

The latest issue of Current reported that Brad Creswell has joined WGTE in Toledo, Ohio, as a host and classical music director. More from Current:

He succeeds Greg Kostraba, who was hired as program manager of WBAA in West Lafayette, Ind. After Creswell’s 16-year career as an operatic tenor, he worked at New York’s WNYC, frequently programming and hosting its flagship music shows, Overnight Music and Evening Music, and overseeing creation of the all-classical WNYC2 channel distributed online and on HD Radio. Creswell also freelanced as a music writer and voiceover artist and occasional Opera Quiz panelist on Metropolitan Opera broadcasts.

And in the world of jazz radio, WBGO-FM in Newark, N.J., launched a new show yesterday, The Checkout. It’s hosted by Josh Jackson, who has worked on new-media projects at the station and on the WBGO/NPR partnership, Live at the Village Vanguard. The show promises to review new releases and feature interviews with some big names. Check out what’s coming up in the show’s first month:

WBGO is celebrating Jazz Appreciation Month in April, which is also the station’s 30th anniversary. The first month of shows has been confirmed, and will feature interviews with Tom Harrell, Omar Sosa, Sangam (Sakir Hussein, Eric Harland and Charles Lloyd), Chick Corea and John McLaughlin, as well as studio sessions with Claudia Acuna and Marco Benevento, a new release from Allen Toussaint’s Bright Mississippi band, and a playlist from Branford Marsalis.

Sounds like it’s worth a listen. Thankfully, WBGO is making it easy to listen at any time and anywhere by offering a podcast via its website.

  1. I absolutely applaud Brad Cresswell. As a wnyc2 fanatic, I can say that Brad is a very talented Public Radio music manager. I will miss him.

    WNYC also just lost George Preston, who is now at WFMT. George was the Music Director at WNYC. Brad worked with George, but, and not to diminish the great work that George did, Brad never got enough credit for his efforts.

    For the moment, these to slots are remaining empty. But I can also say as a listener, wnyc2 is not suffering. The offerings are still wonderful.

    WBGO: new greatness. They are doing videocasts of live Jazz concerts with NPR. Josh has been the WBGO host, doing pre-concert interviews and a running blog. Josh does a very very good job. The new program should be very interesting.
